PORT OF SPAIN (TRINIDAD & TOBAGO) – Trent’anni dopo sua madre, Teniel Victoria Campbell, ciclista caraibica di Trinidad & Tobago, tesserata in Italia per la Valcar Travel & Service, ha ricevuto il premio “First Citizen Senior Sports Woman of the year awards”, ovvero nel suo Paese è stata celebrata come sportiva donna dell’anno 2019. “È davvero una sensazione incredibile vedere il mio nome sullo stesso trofeo dove è stato anche quello di mia madre 30 anni prima”, ha commentato Teniel.

“30 years after her mom , Teniel Victoria Campbell has also won the First Citizen Senior Sports Woman of the year award “ It is indeed a trilling feeling for my name to be on the same trophy as my mother 30 years later ! An ecstatic feeling yet also heart wrenching. This year , the award ceremony was different . None of our athletes were able to dress with elegance and class to attend the function nor collect their respective award. Instead a virtual show was created to honor the achievements of Trinidad and Tobago’s top athletes within their sporting discipline due to the world’s current pandemic which we are all facing. We must all remain healthy , mentally and physically strong in these unprecedented times. This too shall pass and then we can continue to tackle and chase our goals. Together We Aspire , Together We Achieve. Thank you for your continued support and concerns . I am still healthy ,controlling what I can and acting accordingly. Sometimes training sessions can be be mentally challenging as all activities are being done indoors . Quest’anno la cerimonia di premiazione è stata diversa dal solito. L’epidemia di Coronavirus ha colpito anche qui. Nessuno degli atleti premiati ha potuto partecipare alla cerimonia di premiazione. Si è svolto lo scorso fine settimana uno show virtuale trasmesso dalla locale televisione dove sono state celebrate le imprese dei migliori atleti di Trinidad e Tobago.

La madre di Teniel Campbell è Euphenia Huggins è medaglia d’oro nel salto in lungo con record nazionale di 6,15 m. ai Giochi Juniores del Centro America e dei Caraibi (CAC) del 1984; due anni più tardi è arrivata quarta a Santo Domingo. Nel 1988, Huggins ha rappresentato la sua Nazione nella pallacanestro ai Giochi Caraibici in in Guyana e nel 1989 è stata incoronata WITCO (West Indian Tobacco Company) Sportswoman of the Year insieme al vincitore maschile Ian Bishop. Un anno dopo fece suo il bronzo nel salto in lungo ai Giochi del CAC in Messico. Huggins è anche ricordata nel Museo TT come l’unica atleta femminile del Paese ad essere stata nominata per un premio nazionale in due discipline sportive (netball e atletica leggera) nello stesso anno (1987).
